What to look for when buying a luxury sofa

In an age of design saturated with a wide range of pricing, quick-ship options, and influencer endorsements, it can be confusing to shop for home goods.

There is a lot to be learned about quality, especially where seating is concerned. This is why we often specify fully custom or made-to-order furniture for our interior design clients. We always recommend a visit to the manufacturer’s showroom, so that they can personally sit-test various sofas and chairs. Clients invariably learn a lot about what goes into creating a great piece of luxury upholstered furniture.

There are several aspects to consider with such a valuable investment:

1. Quality

With a sofa, you often get what you pay for. A sofa should be a long-term investment, and we often recommend purchasing a custom or bespoke piece from a reputable maker. A quality manufacturer will stand behind their product with warranty and service, should any issues arise. Quality wood framing, materials and construction will stand the test of time, and a manufacturer should proudly be able to answer any questions relating to their quality of construction and finishing. An amazing variety of sofa styles and top-quality fabrics can make your sofa a truly unique piece.

A ready-made sofa or one of lesser quality may disappoint when it starts to sag, creak and wear before you know it. Though you may have to wait slightly longer for delivery on a custom piece, it will be worth it in the end for its quality. A good sofa should last decades, and will be worth re-upholstering down the road if your tastes change.

2. Size

What configuration and size of sofa works best in your space?  Everyone loves a sprawling sectional, but the size and flow of the room have to lend themselves to the proportions of such a bulky piece. Perhaps a standard length sofa, apartment-size sofa, or sofa with a chaise are a better option. Always measure the room and draw up a floor plan to make sure that everything is well-planned.

3. Style

Consider the lines and style features of the piece. Modern, transitional or more traditional? Do you prefer square or rounded arms, cushions and legs? Will it look relaxed or more formal? Do you like a taller arm for afternoon cat naps? Do you prefer a heavier base that sits low to the ground, or taller legs for a lighter look?

Also consider whether you prefer the look and feel of loose cushions on the seat and back, or a “tight seat/tight back” aesthetic. Be sure to get inspired by doing some research into a variety of styles and room settings.

4. Fabric

It’s important that a sofa be upholstered in a fabric that is appropriate for its intended use. The fabric will need to wear well over time, and resist crushing, pilling or fading.  Do you have children or pets? Many beautiful fabrics on the market now have stain-repellent qualities. If you are purchasing your sofa through a designer, you’ll have an endless selection of fabrics to choose from, and likely several options within your desired price point. If you are purchasing from a retailer, consider the variety of fabric types and colours to achieve your desired look.

5. Comfort and Proportion

Comfort is key with such a major piece of furniture. Preferences in this area are very personal. If you have back problems, you may prefer firmer cushions. If you like a luxurious look and cozy feel, you may consider feather or down filling on the seat or back cushions (although be aware that you may need to fluff those cushions on a regular basis). Height, body and leg proportions also factor into comfort. Take off your shoes, lie back or sit as you normally would. Is everything just as should be? Many custom manufacturers can adjust proportions and frame sizes to make everything is just so for your ultimate comfort.

A luxury sofa should look unique in terms of style and radiate its quality in the choice of fabric and detail. It should feel inviting and ultimately comfortable – the best seat in the house!

If you are already working with an interior designer, they will be happy to guide you through the sofa selection process, and recommend quality manufacturers. If you’re making the selection on your own, don’t be afraid to ask questions and sit-test as many options as possible in order to make the very best purchase.
